Rivian is already working on six new models

Even though they technically haven't delivered their first vehicle yet

The Rivian truck and SUV were unveiled a couple of years ago and they were mostly well received by the media and the public. Two years later Rivian, just like other manufacturers including Tesla, is struggling to actually get the cars on the road but they're still thinking big. They're working on six new models and they've already trademarked new names for them.

According to the Rivian Owners Forum - apparently already very active - the American truck maker applied for six new trademarks with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) on July 23, 2021 : R3S, R4S, R5S, R3T, R4T, and R5T. Based on the company’s naming scheme, the ‘S’ models are likely to be SUVs while the ‘T’ models are trucks.

In the meantime, deliveries of the 2022 Rivian R1T have been delayed until August at the earliest but, despite these production issues, the brand continues to gain traction with multi-billion-dollar investments coming left and right, including from big names such as Ford and Amazon.

Competition is hotting up for Rivian and Tesla with the GMC Hummer and the Ford F-150 Lightning. Even Chevy is working on an electric version of the Silverado. Personally, based on looks alone, I'd have the Rivian, even though I gotta admit I actually like the Cybertruck. What do you think?

  • They are starting to concern me now. No sales yet and they are ramping up production in a big way. Not wise. They did have one of the better business models out there but now I'm starting to wonder. Glad I didn't invest in this company. It could all collapse at any point under it's own ambition. Not wise. I hope they prove me wrong!

  • The green suv was In Monterey CA this week. I spotted it when returning to my hotel late Thursday night. I was slow to react with getting a photo

  • Or they are safeguarding the names of their future models.

Just like Peugeot used to change the last digit to signify a new generation, Rivians might name their second gen vehicles R2S/R2T the third R3S/R3T etc.

    • Why Ethan? They could compete with Tesla and hopefully take some of their sales. I think that they seem like fairly decent trucks/SUVs. I wouldn't buy one either, but I think it would interesting for them to do fairly well.

    • Just because you don’t like EVs? Just because you don’t want them doesn’t mean that everyone has to have the same opinion as you.

  • It would be nice if Rivian planned to make a saloon or, God forbid, a sports coupe. There are still some U.S. citizens who prefer to drive cars because they have no need for, or desire to own, a truck.

    • It’s an off-road adventure company. Buy a Tesla if you want a car

    • Or buy anything but a Tesla. Their build quality is awful.
