We all knew that Robert Downey Jr. is a bit of a legend. I mean, how could you not be when you don't even have to act really to become Tony Stark? He's one of the coolest people in Hollywood and it seems that has extended to his cars. Just recently he got in touch with Miluwakee, Wisconsin's SpeedKore shop and asked them to create a custom European sports car for him. Whilst this was a bit out of the comfort zone of SpeedKore as it usually focuses on American stuff like this fully carbon Dodge Demon and this 1,500 hp Dodge Charger, it rose to the challenge and the results are pretty spectacular!

Using a classic BMW E9 Coupe as the base car, SpeedKore added brand new unpainted carbon fibre parts on the front air dam, rocker mouldings and rear bumper, leaving the rest of the body in its original steel construction. The shop kept the car's original brick red paint and re-finished the original kidney grille and window surrounds in Cerakote Titanium Grey, a colour combination that looks absolutely gorgeous. Finishing off the exterior touches are a set of HRE three-piece forged wheels, a custom machined rear spoiler and yellow-tinted glass for two of the front headlamps. Very lovely indeed!

It gets even more gorgeous on the inside too. That Nardi steering wheel looks amazing with its grey wood rim, as do the matching wood inserts on the dashboard and the doors. The coffee-coloured leather and grey fabric on the seats looks amazing too, as do the matching centre console and doors. It's clear that SpeedKore have thought about a bit of mod cons too, judging by the cupholders in the centre console!

Whilst the BMWs of this era and body style would typically have a rear seat, SpeedKore opted to delete that for RDJ's build. It's been replaced by a luggage rack, which is probably a better use of that space if you'd ask me considering that in coupes like this only kids can comfortably fit in the back really! There's also a leather-lined Yeti cooler in the boot, because why not? This is a car that's going to be driven in the sunny California climate and you're probably going to want to bring some cold drinks down to the beach with you.

So, what kind of lump is powering this modernized classic BMW? Well, it's got a fair bit more power than it would have had back in the 1970s! SpeedKore has dropped a 3.6-litre BMW S38 engine (first used in the E34 M5) into this beautiful machine. The engine puts out a pretty decent 311 hp and power is sent to the rear wheels via an old-school 4-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Maybe the more driving purists among us might balk at a 4-speed auto being the transmission of choice here, I highly doubt that RDJ will want to take this beautiful piece of craftsmanship to a race track. It's just too nice to for that!

If there was any doubt over Robert Downey Jr.'s petrolhead credentials, they've well and truly been erased now. This BMW has been beautifully done, especially considering that it was done by a company that normally doesn't do European classics, and the modifications to make this car a proper restomod are incredibly tasteful. I hope RDJ and his family treasure this car for years to come!

  • Ha! You assumed something and miserably failed. I assume just like real life. I know how to drive manuals and hate them. Literally the most boring thing to do. I included Vietnam because that’s old news like the manual transmission.
