Roger Penske Wants To Buy The Mercedes Benz F1 Team
Roger Penske is a living legend, there is no doubt about it. When he wants something he goes after it and he doesn't go small either. When Penske wanted a race track did he bother with a smaller venue? No! He went straight for Indianapolis the most famous track in America and maybe the world. Well the same thing would appear to be the case when Mr. Penske sets his eyes on buying a Formula 1 team.
F1 Insider reported Friday that Penske is one of the potential buyers of Mercedes' F1 program which was recently put up for sale according to the report. Penske is reportedly already engaged in talks to purchase the all conquering Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team. Just in case you've been living under a rock for the past six years, Mercedes is on a bit of a hot streak winning the past six Drivers & Constructors championships.
Other potential buyers include Russian chemical Mogul Nikita Mazepin. Nikita Mazepin is currently an F2 driver and it seems the family wants to follow the Lawrence Stroll model. I.E. purchase F1 team, place prominent family member who happens to be an open wheel racer and place him in one of the open driver's seats.
According to the report Mercedes wants out of the day to day operations of the team. Mercedes aims to continue as a power unit constructor and reportedly approached Red Bull about a potential engine deal that didn't amount to anything.
Penske has a history with Mercedes having used Merc power to win the 1994 Indy 500. Penske also has a history in F1, it would appear he wants to combine the two with his purchase of Indy and IndyCar on his way to owning everything.
