ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM VIII – A NEW ERA OF LUXURY HAS ARRIVED

It’s not often Rolls-Royce graces us with a new Phantom. With the marquee dating all the way back to 1925, the new 2018 model is only the 8th iteration, with number seven having been around since way back in 2003. Let’s just say that with so much development time, it had better be special. Spoiler alert: it is.

SOME PHANTOM FIGURES

The Phantom VIII was the first Rolls to sit on an all-aluminium spaceframe the company calls “Architecture of Luxury.” Future plans call for all new models to use this platform, starting with the Cullinan. Of course, the engine has received plenty of attention as well. Replacing the Phantom VII’s naturally-aspirated V12 is a new, twin-turbocharged V12 producing 563 bhp and 664 lb-ft of torque, both figures represent a significant improvement over the VII. Signalling a shift in philosophy at Rolls-Royce, performance numbers have been released on the newest Phantom: 0 – 62 in 5.3 seconds, with a 186-mph de-restricted top speed.

QUIET AS AN APPARITION

Forget about numbers, though, as this car is all about providing an ethereal experience that defies measurement. Active anti-roll bars and a self-levelling air suspension keep the ride stable and level, while a camera system dubbed “Flagbearer” scans the road to prepare the suspension for any upcoming irregularities. Intensive focus on sound insulation has resulted in, according to Rolls-Royce, the quietest car in the world. Over 135 kgs of sound insulation were integrated into the design, and even the tyres have been specially designed for the Phantom, integrating foam into the design to reduce sound intrusion. With too many unique features to cover, I will just use one to show how over-the-top this car is: Owners are encouraged to choose a small sculpture or painting to display behind a glass panel on the dashboard, turning the car into a mini art gallery. It’s touches like this that set the Phantom apart from the competition, even cars as good as the Mulsanne.

CONCLUSION

Rolls’ unrelenting focus on luxury and quietude has paid off, with reviewers heaping praise on the car for its amazingly silent and buttery-smooth ride. In fact, many outlets are already calling it the best luxury car ever. It appears the new Phantom is well-prepared to reign as king for another 15 years.
