I do not think anyone was expecting that news but the current formula 1 world champion has hung up his gloves. It seems strange after such controversy with the last race that Nico does not want to try and retain his title in 2017
This is what he said (source autosport online)
"I want to take the opportunity to announce that I have decided to end my Formula 1 career in this moment here," said Rosberg.
"It's hard to explain, it has been ever since I started when I was six years old, I had a very clear dream and that was to become Formula 1 world champion.
"Now I've achieved that, I've put everything into it for 25 years of racing and with the help of everybody around me, with the help of fans and the help of my team and my family and friends I have managed to achieve that this year.
"So it has been an incredible experience for me that I will remember forever.
"At the same time, it has been very very tough also because the last two years losing to Lewis were extremely difficult moments for me, which fuelled my motivation in a way that I didn't even know was possible to fight back and to achieve my dream finally."
On track Hamilton always seemed the more motivated and aggressive driver and only due to some bad luck he lost the championship, maybe this is why nico has retired, could it be he knows it was luck he won the title and it will not happen again. The internal battle between team mates and the team has been evident this year and toto wolf has not hidden his displeasure at the way they have behaved on track. Could it be Mercedes felt for the teams good the drivers could not remain team mates, redbull looked even more of a threat by the end of the season and could have taken away Mercedes advantage in the 2017 season. They need team mates who will work together and not take each other off. It's something we will never actually know the answer too, what does everyone else think, could this be the case
