Running a Bugatti Chiron costs around $100,000 a year

“You can’t afford the car if you can’t afford the running costs” is a mantra we should always keep in mind whenever we’re thinking about buying a new car. The Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is an extreme -albeit useful - example of this. You need around 3.6 million dollars to buy it… and around $100,000 (£74k / $85) a year to run it. Not including taxes, labour, fees, etc. Ouch.

After visiting Bugatti Singapore, a Malaysian petrolhead named Muhammad Al Qawi Zamani has shared the running costs for a Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport and the numbers are quite scary, as you’d imagine. He shared the prices is Malaysian ringgit, but I’m gonna use US Dollars. For reference: $1 is equivalent to £0.73 or €0.85 at today’s rate.

The hypercar requires a fluid change - new oil filter, oil and coolant - every 14 months or 10,000 miles, at a cost of $24,952. You also need a new set of wheels every 14 months, and that’s $49,904, not including for new tyres.

About that, you can use Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3, all-season Michelin Pilot Sport PAX or Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 XL, all three sets are made exclusively for the Chiron and each set costs $7,984. However, if you own a Chiron, you’re probably not going to settle for second best and you’re probably going to buy the best possible set of tyres: Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R TR, which cost $41,919 a set.

Brakes? The front discs cost $49,905 and the pads for said discs cost $8,982. Brakes maintenance? That’ll be $58,887 for cleaning and fluids.

Ideally, you should replace the air duct coolers, the Garrett turbochargers and the fuel tank every 4 years, and they cost $21,958 (duct coolers), $25,950 (turbochargers) and $43,916 (fuel tank).

Other things? You need to fork out $60,000 for a new windscreen and $3,792 for the wipers. Bugatti will also charge around $28,500 for engine calibration, something you’ll need every 42-48 months.

Most Bugatti owners don’t really drive their cars. Partly because they (statistically) own at least 15 more cars, and also because most just want to add a Bugatti to their collection, drive it for five minutes in five years and then flip it a few years later.

Then again if you own a Bugatti, I guess the mantra applies in reverse: if you can afford it, you’ll have no problem with maintenance costs.
