Russell vs Bottas: Could Nyck De Vries to Williams rumour indicate Merc outcome?
First Sector has Tweeted a rumour that Mercedes would like to place current Formula E driver Nyck De Vries at Williams for 2022, partnering Latifi.
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE RUSSELL-BOTTAS SEAT BATTLE SO FAR?
Russell and Bottas have allegedly been fighting over one seat that's available, the 2nd Mercedes seat, currently occupied by the latter driver. Valtteri Bottas has 5 podium results in 2021, with a highest 2021 finish of 2nd place, received at the Red Bull Ring. George Russell has appeared in Q2 in all rounds so far in 2021, even earning 2 shock Q3s. He came close to scoring 1 point for Williams in Austria, before Fernando Alonso overtook the Williams driver in the closing stages, had a mechanical failure, slow pitstop with a back-to-back pair of pitstops and a retirement in Styria, after running a strong P8, keeping the much faster cars behind, including the AlphaTauri of Yuki Tsunoda. George Russell had a 3 place penalty after allegedly sending newest Ferrari driver, Carlos Sainz, into a spin during the inaugural F1 Sprint at the British GP, losing a P9 in the process.
COULD NYCK DE VRIES RUMOUR "CONFIRM" THE 2ND MERCEDES DRIVER FOR 2022?
It is rumoured that Mercedes would like to give Nyck De Vries his F1 debut in 2022, partnering Latifi at Williams, 2 years after being 'robbed' of a chance after Williams signed Nicholas Latifi on a two-year deal. All of this would depend on if Valtteri Bottas loses his Mercedes seat to George Russell and he DOESN'T re-sign for Williams. If the source is credible, then that would highly likely confirm Russell will join Mercedes in 2022, replacing Bottas and partnering 7x world champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton.
WHAT COULD IT MEAN FOR VALTTERI BOTTAS IF HE GETS SNUBBED FOR 2022?
It could be a disaster for the Finn that F1 fans like to criticise, excluding myself. If this rumour is correct, Valtteri Bottas would be snubbed by Mercedes and would be snubbed by - or would snub - Williams Racing. Alfa Romeo Racing seems to be interested in the Finn, could that team bring back the version of Bottas last seen in his Williams days?
