Built in 1958, this station was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright to be a precursor to a new concept in gas stations. The design was originally produced for his utopian vision called Broadacre City. He envisioned the gas station as a social centre, where community groups could meet. There is a glass fronted lounge above the shop where it was planned that people could gather for this purpose.

The most notable part of the structure is the huge, cantilevered copper canopy projecting over the forecourt. It was originally planned to have the refueling hoses hang down from the canopy, saving space on the forecourt. But safety regulations stopped him from doing this and conventional pumps were installed. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic places in 1985, because of its architectural importance.

My 1976 MGB visited the gas station a few years ago.

The station is open today and you can fill your car with petrol/gas. It's a full service station, so someone pumps your fuel for you. You can take a look around while you pump boy works. In the glass fronted lounge is a small display about Frank Lloyd Wright, the gas station and his Broadacre vision. It's a very cool place to visit. Having visited the place in my MGB, I intend to drive my Studebaker up to Cloquet one day and refuel it there.
