Sales: the Toyota Corolla is the 2019 world champion
The data are beginning to become clearer. Over the first ten months of 2019, Japanese and American manufacturers dominate the market. The historic champion is therefore, for the moment, the Toyota Corolla, which remains the best-selling car of all time. Its sales increased by 2.7% in 2019 compared to 2018. It totals 1,020,887 units over the first ten months of 2019.
The Japanese compact car is followed by Ford's F-series pickup trucks, which sold 875,194 units in ten months. However, this represents a drop of 2.5% compared to 2018. The model, which is starting to get old, now has to compete with newer competitors such as the very successful Rams, which are ranked seventh.
The models recording the strongest progress are the Ram pickups as well as two SUVs: the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V with respectively +10.5% and +16%. This is logical since these two models have recently been renewed and demand for SUVs is stronger than ever.
On the other hand, it is the more traditional models that are suffering the strongest declines. In particular, the small Volkswagen Polo is falling by 18.1%. Its big sister, the Golf, has also lost speed, with -14.5%. This situation is entirely explainable because the Golf was at the end of its life. The eighth generation should reverse the trend.
