Say hello to the 700bhp Ford Mustang RTR

Ford asked Vaughn Gittin Jr to tinker with the Mustang; the result is this astonishing 700bhp+ monster

Ford asked sideways supremo Vaughn Gittin Jr to ‘tinker’ with the 2018 Mustang, and this is the very powerful result, the Mustang RTR. It’s a 700bhp tyre-smoking, sideways dedicated machine signed off by the man himself.

Set to be revealed at SEMA tomorrow (31 October) it will be coming to selected Ford dealerships around the globe offering “turnkey packages with over 700 horsepower.”

The RTR comes varying stages of tune, ranging from Spec 1, Spec 2, and the inevitably most powerful Spec 3. Every Spec features the RTR design package, which includes new aero styling such as the front bumper turning vanes and the forged Aero 7 wheels, new lights and graphics with a plaque signed by Vaughn himself on the inside.

The last time we saw a Mustang RTR it was blessed with a piffling 725bhp, so we would expect (and hope for) a greater number this time around, because you know, power is good. To this end it's been confirmed that the 5.0-litre V8 motor will come with 700bhp plus which is a huge number.

Speaking of the king of sideways tyre-smoking action, he states “With our unique styling across the entire RTR lineup, available multi-purpose adjustable suspension components and power upgrades that our customers have grown to love and use to push their RTRs to the limit! I am confident, and many will agree, that this is one of the most fun Ford Mustangs ever to hit the street!” All of this translates to saying that the new RTR is a proper full-bloodied monster of a pony car which makes us at DT towers very happy indeed.

If all this RTR insanity wasn’t enough, the reveal at SEMA will also include a 2018 Ford F-150 RTR Muscle Truck for good measure if the Mustang RTR is not enough for you.

Team DriveTribe will be reporting live from SEMA, at which point we shall confirm things such as the price, performance numbers, the likely fact that the UK won’t get it (boo) and that massive horsepower number.

Do you think that the Mustang RTR could be the ultimate pony car? Tell us in the comments and join the discussion in the #performance-cars live chat.

American Formula D racer, Vaughn Gittin Jr. will be talking to Bill Caswell LIVE only on the DriveTribe app.

  • I seriously don't get why they don't sell in UK 😑

    • Because the only one worth getting is the 5.0 V8 and that's about £40k here. My local dealer won't move on the price - I tried. The same car in the US is about $33k, which is £25k in old money, and that's RRP! It probably wouldn't sell in the US...
