Morgan has finally shown us its all-new model at the Geneva motor show - the Plus Six. It has been 19 years since we last got a brand-spanking new Morgan with the Aero 8, and aren't we pleased it's here!
The traditional set style of a Morgan is very much still the same, but with this new generation comes with a lot of modern technology and touches that make us see Morgan in a new light. Take the new engine for a start, it's not the old V8 they used to put in - now it's a new 3.0-Litre BMW B58 straight-six turbocharged engine. It's the same engine used in the BMW Z4 and the new Toyota Supra, so you get 335 horses to play with in with a car that weighs just 1075kg.
That nice new engine comes with a great eight-speed ZF gearbox which allows it to hit 60mph in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 166mph if you give it a boot full. The combination of these 3 factors has created a fast and nimble car that may rival the sports cars of BMW, Toyota and possibly the daddy of sports cars - the Mazda MX-5.
The most important part of this new Morgan is the body though. Some of you - maybe a lot - will say it looks the same as every other Morgan. That's true, but it's the composition of the body and chassis that's new. Using a new aluminium and wooden frame (dubbed CX), will allow the Morgans of the present and future to support hybrid and electric powertrains - giving the chance to easy upgrades or changes when customers wish to change how they power their Morgans.
Personally, my favourite part is the two driving modes it comes with - Sport and Sport Plus. These two modes change the response times of the throttle and transmission - no messing with suspension or trick magnetics. No chilling in this car, it's fast or faster!
Morgan expects to build around 300 units of this Plus six each year, with a starting price of £77,995. You can sign up for your interest at Morgan.co.uk
