See my Thunder Dragon Rally footage in full 4k at London's Excel!
If you happen to be visiting BVE, the UK's premiere media tech event, then be sure to stop by the Holdan stand to see my Panasonic 4k footage.
Don't forget to adjust the youtube playback setting to it's highest resolution!
When I left Sky in 2015 and was asked to film the Thunder Dragon Rally, I decided it was time to invest in my own camera equipment. After much research I opted for the Panasonic DVX200 4k camera. My DSLR could have done the job adequately but I ruled that out for several reasons; being from a broadcast background I like a camera I can rest on my shoulder and is well balanced. My subject matter means I am often working in dust, sand and exhaust fumes ......not ideal for switching lenses, so a fixed lens with a good zoom range was critical. Most content is still shown in HD, home computers can struggle with editing 4K footage, and very few people have 4k TV's but if I'm spending thousand's on a camera I don't want it to be obsolete 6 months down the line, so it had to be 4k. I also liked the wide dynamic range the camera offered; at the time no one was paying much attention to HDR but 18 months down the line everyone wants it! Add to that the cameras image stabilisation ability, relative light weight and size and I decided it was the camera I had to have! The only problem was, it had just been launched and was not yet available in this country. Holdan, Panasonic's distributor, made a few calls...it was an anxious wait but I picked the camera up just 1 week before I flew to India! I took my dslr as a backup but needn't have bothered, the DVX200 more than exceeded my expectations.
I need to edit on my laptop as am usually producing videos while on the road. My laptop is very high spec but struggles to handle 4k footage using Premiere Pro CS5 hence only a short 4k clip. I have been advised that Edius software should handle it and speed up my editing time....if I can get hold of a copy I'll let you know! I don't even own a television, let alone a 4k one so I'm really looking forward to seeing this on a big 4k screen!
