Seeing two racing greats at the same time is enough to change your life

It is heaven for anyone really...

At Watkins Glen International in the cold, damp September air, there is always a particular event that makes my year. This said event is known as the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix, and it is celebrated in order to pay homage to Watkins Glen's racing history. This is all fine and dandy, but that isn't why we are here. So then, why exactly are we here?

It was at this event that I was able to see two all-time greats in motorsport history. Now, even though I saw plenty more than that, these really were the highlights of my weekend. They must have made my year because here we are, almost 4 months later, and I'm still talking about it. So even though I am still not really getting to the point, let me give you a hint at what I was able to see, and what appeared to by my favorite moment of the year. One word: Daytona.

Many races are held at this very famous and very prestigious track. On one hand, you will see many drunk American's celebrating, or fighting, about who won that years' NASCAR race. On the other hand, you will find some very tired men sleeping in the pits, waiting for their stint in the 24 Hour race held there every January. Either way, it is this mixture of style that makes this track great. And in order to celebrate that, it's time to bring out the cars.

Dodge came out with a NASCAR that won the Daytona 500. So, naturally, to celebrate this, they called this car the Dodge Charger Daytona. Similarly, around the same time, Ferrari finished a staggering 1,2,3 in their new car for the Rolex 24 Hour race. So, again, they called this car the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, also known as the Ferrari Daytona.

So enough with the history, and let's get to it.

As you may now have figured out, I was able to see both of these all-time greats race around WGI at roughly the same time. And just being able to look at one of these cars, let alone touch one, is enough to change your life forever.

Pardon the kid. And the angry woman.

Pardon the kid. And the angry woman.

Because I have been hiding my joy for so long, not only have I forgotten what else to say, but also how high that wing actually is! It's like it has taken 3 doses of Viagra! It's savage! And the Ferrari is just so sleek, Italian, and red, that you genuinely can't help but stare, and drool, and wet your pants. Not that I know this from experience or anything...

Anyway, this is just a little story I thought should share. I hope you have been able to experience a similar feeling, and possibly with even cooler cars. However, you can't get much cooler than this. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday's!

  • Seeing the R390 was an awesome thing to cross off the bucket list. Every thing I ever read growing up said this car was stored in Nissan’s museum in Japan. Then suddenly it was touring the US the very same year I booked a trip to Amelia Island. It was like fate made it happen lol

  • It would be epic to see a NASCAR superbird in person. Truly epic.

Personally, goingnto Rennsport Reunion was overwhelming. Porsche themselves pull out all the stops. Getting to see Porsche 917s, 956/962s, 935s, and all the classic and modern 911s actually racing was stunning. Of course seeing the can am 917s was my highlight. Monster cars with over 1000hp driving on the track...

    • Yeah! Seeing stuff like this is very intense. Rennsport Reunion is definitely on my bucket list some day. We did once have a 917, and a 962 used to come every year, but due to the weather, people started skipping out on the event. But still,...

    • Well, just so you know, that isn’t the actual Bob Sharp Datsun, but just a normal one with his name written all over it. This is the actual one (was there, didn’t race)
