Interviewing ROUSH Performance & Classic Recreations at #SEMA2018

Today is the final day of SEMA and my second last day in Las Vegas. Awww. For today's post, I want to share a couple of the coolest interviews I had. The following companies are both working on Ford vehicles, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. I will be discussing what these companies are all about, along with their coolest projects. Hope you enjoy!

ROUSH Performance

ROUSH Performance specializes in modifying and enhancing modern Ford Mustangs and F-150s. ROUSH gives its customers three different options to take the Ford Mustang to the next level. Customers can purchase a full upgraded car from ROUSH or, they can buy one of several packages. Or, if they're looking for something specific, they can buy individual parts such as superchargers, upgraded exhausts, suspension components, and interior/exterior cosmetic enhancements.

We also sat down to learn more about ROUSH's history with the son of the founder, Jack Roush Jr. Jack explained how his dad (Jack Roush Sr.) developed his childhood passion for cars and engines while rebuilding engines during his part time job running a lawn mowing company with his brother. After earning his degree, he worked for large automotive manufacturers including Ford. At Ford, Jack Sr. became involved in an employee drag racing team which evolved into his own drag racing team and engine company. Since the 1960s, the company developed into the high performance manufacturing company it is today.

2019 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang

The 2019 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang takes the base 5 litre V8 Ford Mustang available to the public and turns it up to the max. ROUSH adds their TVS 2650 Supercharger as well as several other premium engine components which boosts the power to a whopping 710 horsepower. Among the many upgrades that make up the ROUSH Stage 3, it features a 6- speed manual with rev matching (Also available in automatic πŸ˜’), adjustable coil-over suspension, 20 inch rims and performance tires, aero body kit, and improved interior and exterior styling.

In essence, ROUSH Performance makes the ultimate modern Mustang. While the ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang sounds awesome, ROUSH does sell similar upgrades for the Ford Mustang EcoBoost which is available in the UK and a variety of other international markets where the V8 is not.

2018 ROUSH F-150 SC

ROUSH takes the same approach with the famous Ford F-150 pickup truck. The 2018 ROUSH F-150 SC has the same upgrades as the ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang except the suspension, which is raised for the pickup instead of lowered, along with the tires which are for off-roading rather than the track.

Classic Recreations

Classic Recreations reimagines epic and legendary muscle cars from 1960s America. Focusing mostly on Mustangs, Classic Recreations custom fabricates beautifully enhanced replicas to deliver modern performance in a exquisite 1960's package, all with approval and support of Ford Motor Co. itself. We sat down with Founder, Jason Engel, at SEMA to learn about Classic Recreations' newest offering.

Unveiled for the first time at SEMA 2018, Classic Recreations has built a Ford approved replica of the ultra rare 1969 Boss 429. The original Boss 429 Mustang was a limited production vehicle. It was created by Ford as a homologation of their large Hemi V8 engine so they could use it in NASCAR (*Think Ferrari GTOs). This beast of a car is stunning in black and is powered by a fuel-injected, naturally aspirated 564 cubic inches (~9.2 litre!!!) Hemi V8 spewing 815 horsepower.

It's perfect.

Classic Recreations 1969 Boss 429

Starting with the beautiful classic exterior of the Boss 429, Jason decided to modernize the vehicle by adding amenities such as: Air conditioning, fuel injection, power steering and brakes, coil-over suspension, large/modern brakes, Bluetooth, and a subwoofer.

Given carte blanche by Ford and his buyers, Jason refined the exterior and added several personal touches. He painted the steel bumpers black (as opposed to the original chrome), adjusted the bumper to improve the lines of the car and to reduce the large panel gap, shaved the bolts off the bumper, and shaved off the drip rail. To handle the immense power of the engine, Jason partnered with Centerforce and uses their high performance DYAD clutch and flywheel.

The car is available in all factory colours, but is featured here in his custom colour of choice, "Vengeance Black." There are also several red accents on the car including red brake calipers and red halos around the headlights. Due to the rarity of this vehicle, all the exterior parts are custom and are handmade by Jason and his team. Jason expects parts manufacturers to begin making these parts in the future as the same thing happened with previous models he's made.

If you want this beautiful vehicle, sadly it will set you back approximately $200,000 USD, but I think it's worth it πŸ˜‰.

Jason's agreement with Ford gives him license to use several famous Ford names. Given some hints from him, we hope to see a terrific, classic Ford Bronco at SEMA 2019.


While it's not exactly a fair fight because the Boss 429 is almost 4X the base price of the ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang, there are benefits and drawbacks to each choice. The modern ROUSH Mustang will have advanced safety features and tech including: Air bags, rearview camera, blindspot detectors, GPS, and better gas mileage. The ROUSH is also based on a modern high-production volume vehicle and will thus have enhanced reliability and easy access to cheaper parts. However, the Boss 429 has better styling, greater 'cool factor,' and the presence of an ultra rare car. Although the ROUSH is a fantastic piece of engineering, I personally would be team classic because it's a more pure representation of what an American muscle car should be to me. As Jason Engel mentioned, "The car represents [his] personality," and I couldn't agree more. It's hard to explain, but the vibe I get standing next to this car is aligned with the type of car I would want to own.
