In order to test the towing capability of Toyota's new hydrogen fuel cell semi truck, YouCar did a side-by-side comparison with between it and a traditional diesel. In a shock to nobody, the hydrogen fuel cell truck considerably outpaced the diesel.
Out of the three companies to announce an electric semi, the Toyota is the only one we have seen in action, and it's darn exciting for anyone remotely interested in ground transportation. Toyota has the advantage of having a small number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles out to market already, with the Toyota Mirai being sold in limited numbers.
While technically an electric vehicle, Toyota's truck has hydrogen fuel cells that provide electricity from a chemical reaction between positively charged hydrogen ions and an oxidizing agent. By all merits, it is an electric semi truck.
While this is exciting to see in action, there are some important questions that are unanswered. How inverse is range to load? How will transportation infrastructure adapt to the prospect of fleets of hydrogen-powered trucks? Will there still be lot lizards at hydrogen stations?
