Should Mazda make this MX-5 Shooting Brake a reality?

A shooting brake is simply an elegant, two-door wagon with a sloping rear end. These stunning series of renders by automotive sketch artist, José Antonio Aranda, showcase what the current MX-5 (ND) would look like if Mazda met the demands of this niche market.

For starters, the traditional soft-top roof has been replaced with a hard-top, thereby removing the core purpose of the MX-5 as a lightweight roadster. However, a shooting brake would increase practicality and turn the little Japanese convertible into the ultimate weekend getaway vehicle. The added roof spoiler is a neat touch worth appreciating.

You could argue that the essence of the Miata has vanished as this shooting brake is missing a removable roof. However, the final result would look a tad funny. If you really want a targa-top Miata, your closest bet would be the sleek MX-5 RF that's already available.

  • Looks a lot like a BMW Z3 Coupe, and that's not a bad thing.

  • Ofcourse, a shooting brake is always welcome!

    • No, and Hell No! The shooting brake is an abomination to the design’s of many cars that have been bludgeoned so you have room for the golf clubs. If you want a really exciting golf club hauler, get a Urus.

    • So you are actually comparing MX-5 to Urus? Ok understood!

  • Absolutely. I’m not a convertible guy and I always wanted an MX5 coupe. Figuring that the RF would be the closest I was going to get I bought one (and I love it). But I can’t help but wonder how much more practical it would have been if it’d been a proper coupe...with a liftback...or a shooting brake.

    I actually liked this one...
