Si vis pacem, para ‘Brellum’

Introducing Brellum, the latest watch brand you might wanna keep an eye on

‘Si vis pacem, para bellum’ is Latin for ‘if you want peace, get ready for war’ and I believe most people remember that from the 2004 Hollywood ‘The Punisher’. The film didn’t do too well at the box office but it became a cult, and not just for fans of the Marvel character.

At this point, I’m going to have to admit that I used this adage simply because it sounds good when you substitute the word ‘Bellum’ (war) with Brellum, the latest Swiss microbrand I’m obsessed with.

I’m not even sure I could call it a ‘microbrand’, but then again this is a fluid definition at the moment, so I think I might get away with it.

The name is an anagram of Muller, the surname of the owner of the brand who proudly represents the 4th generation of Muller family watchmakers, with the addition of the letter ‘B’, a nod to the village of Bonfol, located in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

Muller says the name is also inspired by the word ‘Bellum’, because he says “one of of its synonyms is combat - the combat that each one of us experiences in our way”.

The Brellum collection consists of 6 wristwatches - Pilot Power Reserve Chronometer, Wyvern GMT Chronometer, DuoBox Classic and DuoBox Gold Edition, Pandial and Wyvern 5 Days Chronometer. I wanna talk about the Pilot Power Reserve Chronometer.

This is a pilot watch but I’d also call it a sportswatch. The 41.8 mm x 15.90 stainless steel case (it weighs 88 g, without the bracelet) houses a Brellum BR-750-PR automatic-winding, COSC-certified movement with 25 jewels, a high-beat rate (28,800 vph) and a 46-hour power reserve.

Both the crystal and the caseback are made from sapphire, so you bang it on the door without damaging it (but don’t) and water resistance Is 50 mt. It should be 100 mt but I’ve swum with 50 mt watches on several occasions and I’ve never had any issues.

It’s available with a blue dial, a black dial or a white one, and it’s a bit pricey, it retails for 2,890 Swiss Francs, but then again it is COSC-certified and if I could, I would.

Do you own a pilot watch?
