Sir Clive Sinclair has passed away at the age of 81

The inventor of possibly the most laughed-at product in the auto industry is no more

I'm sure that most of us have watched James May's cars of the people at some point in our lives. If you have watched season 2 episode 3 then you might well remember him reviewing the Sinclair C5. One of the main quotes from it was this: "He was a clever man. Sorry, I mean he is a clever man cause despite this(the C5) he's still alive."

Well, sadly that is no longer true as he has died of cancer aged 81.

You'll want to skip to 42 minutes for the Sinclair C5 segment.

Sinclair was famous for his pocket calculators which were a world-first. He was also the person behind the home computer that the average person could justify buying with money.

His two most famous inventions though were the Sinclair C5 and the ZX line of computers.

The C5 was not a commercial success. They built 14,000 of them but only managed to shift 5,000 off the shelves. In the end the shops who had them in stock had to take large losses to clear them. It received backlash from pretty much everybody except the 14 year-olds who got to be on the roads legally.

The ZX series of computers were wildly successful as the first domestic computers that cost under £100 and millions of them were sold. Ultimately though the C5 killed the company and Sinclair had to sell up to Alan(Lord) Sugar for £5 million.

Tributes have been paid by several well-known figures. They include:

Elon Musk- "RIP, Sir Sinclair. I loved that computer(ZX Spectrum)."

Lord Sugar- "What a guy he kicked started consumer electronics in the UK with his amplifier kits then calculators, watches mini TV and of course the Sinclair ZX. Not to forget his quirky electric car. R.I.P Friend."

Professor Brian Cox- The ZX81 was my introduction to computing and I loved it! Started out with a 1k version and eventually saved up for a 16k ram pack - thank you Clive!"

And last but not least James May-

  • I saw a real Sinclair C5 for the first time a couple of months ago in Anglesey and it’s a real piece of history despite it being a flop.

  • Wasn’t there a TV drama about his career produced which highlighted his rivalry with Alan Sugar? If memory serves Martin Freeman was one of the actors.
