Sit and weight, Alpine

Alpine's gorgeous buckets weigh half as much as a Renault Sport Megane's Recaros

Renault's new Alpine sports car is so focused on weight saving that its seats will weigh half as much as rivals.

Renault doesn't specify the supplier for the fixed-back buckets but says they weigh 13.1kg, which is half that of chairs in rival cars. For reference, the Recaros in a Megane RS weigh 27kg before you've loaded your fat ass into them.

The handsome seats, which feature retro quilted leather sections harking back to the original A110, have pronounced side bolsters for strong lateral support, but the thigh bolsters look pretty modest, which should make it easy to climb in and out. That suggests the car is intended to be a useable daily rather than a 10-minute Sunday thrill.

There doesn't seem to be much adjustment offered, and even the simple fore-aft rails are left uncovered to keep weight down.

We'll find out more when the whole car is finally revealed at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in early March.
