Skoda recreates old Top Gear stunt by landing a helicopter on a Kodiaq's roof

It may not have Clarkson driving through a burning building, but it's still really impressive

Do you remember back in the old days of Top Gear when Jeremy had a Skoda Yeti on test one week? Unlike most other journalists who would just review it and say how it was to drive, Clarkson decided he wanted to drive it through a burning building and land a helicopter on it.

This 'stunt' gave Skoda so much press that they have decided to recreate it using its brand new facelifted Kodiaq SUV.

The Yeti was discontinued in 2017 and was replaced by the Kodiaq, so surely it can still act as a landing pad for a 622 kilograms (1,370 pounds) helicopter?

As this video proves, it most certainly can. Like in the Top Gear test, this is a completely standard Kodiaq being mounted by a $350k Robinson R22 that weighs over 600kg. Admittedly, this car isn't moving like the Yeti was in Clarkson's feature, but perhaps there are more health and safety regulations in 2021?

The facelifted Kodiaq used in this Skoda video now features matrix LED headlights and a 2.0-litre gasoline engine option for the RS variant, which used to have a twin-turbocharged diesel engine prior to the facelift.

Who did it better? Clarkson or Skoda?

  • Good on them for recreating it! I would’ve thought a lot of manufacturers would just ignore that kind of stuff

  • When they designed it they probably specified that it should be able to take the weight of the helicopter so they could do this!
