Skoda has just released a glimpse of how its next generation Golf rival will look, and has also stated it will reveal its new car to the public later in 2018.

The car will be heavily influenced by the Skoda Rapid Concept design study that was shown off at the Paris Motor Show, and we now also know it will sit on the Volkswagen group MQB A0 platform, along with with the new Audi A1, Seat Arona and the Volkswagen Polo.

If you look at the silhouette photo and the side shot of the Vision RS side by side it's easy to spot the similarities, in particular the rear winglet and tail lights wrapping themselves all the way to the side of the car. You can also notice the distinct lack of the really cool flush door handles from the Vision RS concept.

It's not yet clear how true the new hatch from Skoda will be to the plug-in hybrid Vision RS concept, but if it does come electrified it will be the first of the A0 variants of the MQB platform to do so.

The car will be a 5-door only similarly to the latest Ibiza and Polo, and will apparently come with a range of new driver assistance systems – possible semi-autonomous systems pinched from the upcoming Golf Mk8. Combine with the recently announced virtual cockpit that is likely to be added to this model, and this Skoda might make the Focus and Astra feel cheap..

Skoda has sure came a long way from being a budget brand to… well, being a kind of cool budget brand! Or is it just me?

What do you think? Would you consider a Skoda over a Focus/Astra or even a Golf?

  • Did they kill the Fabia while I wasn't looking? Actually, that was based on the Polo I think.

  • But Å koda and VW are pretty much the same company... or at least Å koda is owned by VW. I dont think that VW cares all that much if they sell the same amount of Golfs as this or even less, because the people who dont buy a Golf will buy this, either way the money goes to them.

  • I think Skoda have come to a point where they’ve started looking better than Audis.
