Something for the weekend: Capri RS turbo or Polo g40

Two rare icons could be the perfect rides for this weekend’s big Ford and Volkswagen shows

We’re into June and that means the show season is in full swing – even if someone forgot to tell the sun.

For VW obsessives, hot on the heels of last week’s Wörthersee Treffen in Austria, there’s GTI International at Corby’s Rockingham Speedway in the UK this Saturday and Sunday.

And Ford fans will be decamping just a few miles south at Santa Pod Raceway for the Classic Ford Show on Sunday June 4. You can find links to both events at the bottom of this post.

But if you want to make a statement at either event, you’re going to need the right wheels. GTi International is actually open to all manner of VW Group cars, but keeping it rare and Volkswagen, we unearthed this Polo GT G40 on the German treasure-trove that is Mobile.de.

The second-generation Polo G40 is a rare enough sight, but rock up to a show in the first-gen car, which was never available in right-hand drive, and you’ll swivel heads like a tennis match at an owl sanctuary.

Only 500 examples were initially built after the car was released in 1987, the G40 getting its name from the size of its G-lader supercharger, which helped the 1272cc engine produce 113bhp, up from 74bhp in the next hottest Polo, the plain GT. Well, that was the next hottest in Europe – Brits made do with the anaemic 54bhp Coupe S.

This one for sale in Limoges, France, is no. 359 of 500, and up for a stiff €22,000 (£20,000). But it appears to have had a pretty comprehensive bare-shell resto, has only had one previous owner and has covered just 68,000 miles.

There are stacks of cheap flights available to the city's airport. What are you waiting for? Here's the link below:

But it’s no good turning up to the Classic Ford Show in a Polo, even the Carrera RS of Polos. What you need is this super-rare Capri RS Turbo.

Offered for sale at Duncan Hamilton, it’s one of 155 built between 1981 and 1982 and available through Ford’s German RS dealers.

The RS Turbos got wider X-pack bodywork and deep spoilers inspired by the legendary Zakspeed Group 5 racing Capris, and had their 2.8 Cologne V6s enhanced by a Garrett T4 turbo running a korma-mild 5.4psi of boost to produce nearly 200bhp.

This seriously special Capri is up for £48,995. Check out the link above for more details. And if you want to know more about GTi International or the Classic Ford Show, you'll find links to those below.
