After almost five decades, speed forme brings the classic z shape right up to date...

I got to visit the NOS 2 Days show in Yokohama on Sunday, which brings together significant classic Japanese cars. Among the jewels of Japan's automotive tradition this visually updated Fairlady Z jumped out at me, immediately making an impact with its bright orange body and pugnacious stance on fat 17" TE37s.

Look closely and this car has a number of small, well-considered additions that, combined together, bring the Z up to date without spoiling the purity of its original lines.

Speed Forme doesn't try to hide the handsome lines of the Z, but rather complement them with a few discrete, restrained tweaks

The chin spoiler starts the change from the original rounded 'fuselage' shape into a more modern, 'ground-hugging' profile

The side skirts and rear valence carry the 'four square' look round to the back of the car.

The lip spoiler adds just the right amount of visual lift, and looks like something one would have seen on track in period, apart from being made of carbon fibre. Period racing Z's often discarded the rear bumpers, which saves a few kilos and visually emphasises the way the car's lines pull tight to a focus at the truncated tail.

The demo car sticks with the L-series engine family, albeit taken beyond the original 150hp L24.

These TE37s look big, but are only a reasonable 17" diameter. The carbon arches look stretched out over the tyre, giving tight fitment but still allowing a halfway-reasonable amount of wheel travel.

Looking back at a glorious past, looking forwards to the challenges still to come.

Although I think that the Z generally looks pretty good bone stock, I also reckon that the tweaks Speed Forme have done look really good. If you had a Z, would you modify it visually? Just wheels and arches, or a bit more? What's your favourite style?

  • I love it. I'm not crazy about the wheels on that car, but it's all tastefully done. I just bought a '77 280Z 2+2 and I plan on tweaking the exterior about the same amount. Ironically it's orange as well.

  • Not sure that it's an improvement
