Spotted: Toyota are prepping an extreme version of the Gazoo Racing Yaris

Will the Civic Type-R finally be knocked off its perch as Japan's premier hot-hatch?

It's well known now that Toyota are releasing a Yaris unlike any we've ever seen before, and in the process, completely reconfiguring the way we think about one of their most successful line of cars. And it's also well known that the new GR Yaris will be made in conjunction with their fabled racing divison, 'Gazoo Racing' - and if Le Mans is anything to go by, they do know a thing or two about making a fast car.

To spice things up even more, and considering the fact that the first edition car hasn't even been released to the general public yet, Toyota have already gone ahead and made a third form of their self-proclaimed pocket-rocket, and they've been spotted testing it around James May's favourite place on earth: The Nürburgring.

Whilst the pictures do seemingly confirm that a stripped out, hardcore version looms on the horizon, that's pretty much all that will be known, for the time being at least. Notable exterior modifications include a supplementary set of flaps and canards along the front bumper, in addition to a huge rear spoiler - both of which only add to the wonderfully mischievous sense of demeanour given off by, what could quite possibly be, the best hot-hatch of 2020.

      • Yes! It’s like that little robot which works with the mustang transformer to infiltrate the plane, can’t quite remember which transformers it was though 🤔

    • In theory I want one to park next to my also theoretical Honda Civic Type R.

I quite like it with its cute rear flared wheel arches and the thingys on the front bumper look interesting and stuff 😀

    • What engines will be on offer?

      • If we go by the "regular" GR Yaris, then it's probably gonna use their turbo inline-3 (maybe they can up the power to 300+ hp?)
