- Mercedes' sixth-gen S-Class is getting a hefty overhaul for 2017. - Key revisions include a host of new engine options and new technology that pushes the luxury saloon towards autonomous driving.- It's also received a range of exterior tweaks, including crystal-look tail lights and optional multibeam LED headlights. - The current generation of Mercedes' premium flagship, dubbed W222, was originally unveiled in 2013.- Inside, you'll find the familiar twin-screen set-up.- The controls in the steering wheel are now touch-sensitive and respond to swiping motions, however.- You can also directly control the adaptive cruise system from the steering wheel, instead of a standalone stalk. - New colour and trim combinations are offered, including 'magma grey and espresso brown'.- Another luxury upgrade is the addition of 'energising' comfort control. This uses all of the car's systems – heating, massaging, light and climate – to deliver ten-minute programmes which promote different moods.- The real changes are under the bonnet, however. Mercedes is offering the updated S-Class with a range of new engines, including straight-six petrols and diesels, and a new twin-turbo V8 petrol.- A host of efficiency-improving features have also been added, including a 48-volt electrical subsystem – which is used to support an integrated starter motor and alternator for straight-six petrol versions. - Mercedes has so far confirmed that the new six-cylinder line-up will include diesel S350d and S400d models, producing 282bhp and 335bhp respectively.- The petrol straight-six engines will arrive later. Mercedes says that the petrol's integrated starter alternator delivers assistance as well as energy recovery, aiding the engines in delivering V8 punch in conjunction with higher efficiency. - The new S560 4Matic gets a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 that produces 463bhp. The flagship Mercedes-AMG versions, in V8 and V12 flavour, remain – but also get a host of minor updates, including styling tweaks.- Other tech upgrades include 'Distronic Active Proximity Control and Active Steer Assist'. This helps the driver keep a safe distance from other cars and slows the car before corners and junctions. - The Mercedes is also now available with the company's 'CURVE' function, which tilts the car's body into corners to improve comfort.- The revamped S-Class, which was unveiled at the Shanghai motor show, will start to arrive in European markets in July – ahead of the arrival of the all-new Audi A8. Revamped flagship Mercedes marks the return of silky straight-six engines – and, of course, it packs a battery of new technology...
