Summer lives on with the new convertible Mercedes-AMG E-Class E53

This is probably going to make you want to drive open top even when it's raining

Summertime always makes promises it can't keep and this year we've had a particularly weird and unusual Summer, which is why I think it makes perfect sense to just carry on and pretend the weather is fine and fire up the engines in our convertible. And there's a lot of engine to be fired up in today's cabrio because it's the Mercedes-AMG E53.

The new E-Class was unveiled a couple of months and AMG versions were to be expected. The engine in this one is an AMG-tuned turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six putting out 429 hp and 384 torques. As ever, they're all equipped with Mercedes' proprietary 4MATIC four-wheel drive system and the newly-developed Speedshift AMG 9-speed gearbox. There's a new splitter, made from carbon fibre, wider wheel arches and the wheelbase is slightly longer. The car sits on 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the rear.

The interior is new, with AMG sports seats available in leather and microfibre cloth as standard but, as you can imagine, they're highly customizable. There's a new MBUX infotainment system and a new touchpad, measuring 10.25 inches as standard (a 12.25-inch version is available in the AMG S model).

Mercedes didn't say anything about prices yet but the equivalent saloon and estate cost £64k and £66k respectively so we can expect this to be a tad more expensive than either.

  • Beautiful car and the colour is brilliant too. Interior colour not so much but clearly that’s a marketeers choice. The lines with the roof up are fantastic too.

  • Looks good. Only bugbear i have about this sort of car is the rear seats. It looks a bit tight back there, and I always think that if the rear doesn’t have enough room for people, then they shouldn’t bother putting seats back there. Anyway, I guess it’ll come out in the reviews.
