Super Formula Final cancelled amidst typhoon threat.
Hiroaki Ishiura declared Champion with a half point lead.
The final was set to be a closely fought decider with just half a point in it at the top. The weather had been miserable on Friday causing delays to the practice sessions and qualifying was cancelled after the first session due to poor conditions.
With worsening weather and a typhoon predicted ahead of Sunday’s races, the organisers have took the decision to cancel the event. The 0.5 point gap stands meaning Hiroaki Ishiura is the 2017 Super Formula Champion.
Circumstances deprived fans of what was set to be a thrilling finale with the small gap at the front and Felix Rosenqvist close behind. But there is one man who has lost more from the turn of events than anyone.
Pierre Gasly had been set to race for Toro Rosso in this weekends United States Grand Prix. After much debate about whether he should skip it to contest the Super Formula final, with just half a point to overturn, he was granted permission to head to Japan and fight for the Championship.
With circumstances as they are, he is set to get no track action at all this weekend. It is, however, widely believed he will resume service with Toro Rosso for the remainder of the season.
