Super GT-500 Season Roundup

The final three races of the 2019 GT-500 Season saw a battle between Team Tom’s and Team LeMans for the Championship that ended at the Season Finale Race in Motegi. It couldn’t have been any closer because when the chequered flag was waved, it was Team Tom’s who just managed to snatch the title away from their rivals – by just a single point.

Drivers Kenta Yamashita and Kazuya Oshima finished in second place behind their main rivals, Nick Cassidy and Ryo Hirakawa, with Kazuki Nakajima and Yuhi Sekiguchi in third place in the other Team Tom’s car.

Team Tom’s left last year’s Championship winners (Team Kunimitsu) in the dust for the standings, a whopping fifty-four points ahead of them in ninth place. It was also 2009 F1 World Champion and 2018 GT-500 Champion Jenson Button’s final race in the sport as he bows out to spend more time with his family.

The final three races of the 2019 Championship took place at Autopolis, Sugo and Motegi with over a month of waiting between the final two races. It saw Team Sard win in the wet/dry race at Autopolis and Team Nissan got their first win with drivers Kohei Hirate and Frederic Makowiecki at the Sugo racetrack.

The Final Championship Standings for the top five teams looks as follows:

1. Team Tom’s (Kenta Yamashita and Kazuya Oshima) – 107 Points

2. Team LeMans (Nick Cassidy and Ryo Hirakawa) – 106 Points

3. Team Nismo (Tsugio Matsuda and Ronnie Quintarelli) – 69.5 Points

4. Lexus Team Zent Cerumo (Yuji Tachikawa and Hiroaki Ishiura) – 65.5 Points

5. Team Sard (Heikki Kovalainen and Yuichi Nakayama) – 64 Points
