Super GT: Karthikeyan/Makino register best result of 2019 at Autopolis
The #64 Modul Nakajima Racing Honda NSX-GT pair of Narain Karthikeyan and Tadasuke Makino had another points performance in the lead GT500 class of 2019 Super GT series at Autopolis in Japan as they recorded their best result of the season.
The Indo-Japanese pair started the weekend on a sound note, finishing eighth in the lone free practice session. The qualifying was decent as well with Makino in charge but the Japanese couldn't break into Q2, finishing 13th for the Sunday's race.
It was a mixed run in the race as rain troubled the teams and drivers with strategy going for a toss. Karthikeyan started the proceedings and ran 12th despite the safety car intervention and difficult circumstances with rain also troubling the runners from Lap 15 onward.
The rain intensified by mid-way in the race as Karthikeyan handed the car to Makino, who by then was running in 10th. Multiple safety car period helped it to be ninth and a subsequent stop for wet weather tyres, helped it move to as high as sixth in the order.
He eventually crossed the line in seventh, to score more points for the team and register their best result of the 2019 Super GT season. They gained a place to be 14th in the standings with 8.5 points after six rounds.
"The first stint was quite difficult because it was raining and we were on slick tyres," said Karthikeyan. "I suppose the result was okay, we finished P7. The rain was not so bad. We will fight again at Sugo."
