Typically, facelifts are a light refresh; possible new wheels, fresher colour options, some contemporary trims, etc. But in the case of the new Mercedes-AMG C43, Mercedes-Benz righted many wrongs and made the car what it should have been in the first place. Aside from it now looking like a proper AMG with a muscular front bumper, a twin-louvre grill that we have seen on flagship AMGs, and most importantly its aggressive diffuser with quad pipes; it gains a refreshed interior, including a fully-digital instrument cluster, a new 10.25-inch infotainment screen, and some new trims and materials. But the biggest talking point is under its hood. Power from the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 is up 17kw to 287kw, whilst torque remains at 520nm. Power is sent through a nine-speed ‘9G TCT’ automatic transmission and into a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system using a 31:69 front-to-rear torque distribution setting. Tested at the Gerotek Testing Facility by Mark Jones of True Speed, the new AMG C43 – in Sedan guise - proved to have the performance of a real AMG, despite not being a “one man one engine” car. In the benchmark 0-100kph sprint, it achieved a time of 4.71 seconds. By comparison, its rival, KIA Motors South Africa’s new Stinger GT ran the 0-100kph in 5.37 seconds. Whereas the C43 needed 13.01 seconds to complete the ¼ mile, the Stinger did it in 13.59 seconds. The standing kilometre was much of the same, with the C43 edged by the Stinger with 23.71 seconds at 226.54kph versus 24.40 seconds at 223.42kph. The 100-200kph sprint was equally close, with the C43 needing 12.77 seconds compared to the Stinger’s equally brisk 13.20 second effort. And finally, whereas the Stinger was electronically limited to 269.97kph, the C43 ran to a maximum speed of 251.49kph. A slight performance gap was expected, considering the less powerful Kia Stinger is rear-wheel drive whereas the C43 is all-wheel drive. Other rivals for the C43 includes BMW South Africa’s 240kw 340i, Volvo Car South Africa’s 270kw S60 Polestar and Jaguar’s 280kw XE S. Mercedes-Benz South Africa have the AMG C43 Sedan priced at R960 265. #TunedAutomotive #CRBN8
