I've always hated the Porsche Cayenne. Just because it looked ugly. I know I am kind of complicated. For me, all Porsches look quite good (except: 914, 924, 944, 968...) and even the first generation of the Panamera is pretty, in my opinion. But about the Cayenne I always felt like, how could they mess it up so badly? This rear-end just looks like the one from a Renault Koleos. I only liked the name. Cayenne. Sounds exotic. Performance-wise, it has always been the best SUV. You could get a GTS with a more focused chassis, or a Turbo S with dragster-like speeds. But still, you could comfortably fit five people in one. Arguably, the Porsche Cayenne is quite a fantastic package. But I always hated it. Until now.

This is the 2018 Porsche Cayenne. It was revealed mid-2017, and we're now seeing the first cars roll on the roads. And all we can say is that, in my opinion, it has finally become easy on the eyes. We like the Panamera-like taillights with this thin light bar. We love the huge mouth that acts as a front grille. And we are absolutely loving the revised interior. We are quite happy to say that we like the new Cayenne's appearance. But time to take it on the road to see if it drives like a real Porsche, or like a soccer mom's minivan.

So, here I find myself behind the wheel of the new #Porsche Cayenne and man it's such a great place to sit in. Gone are most of the center console knobs. Instead, it's the same piano black base on which you will find illuminated touch sensitive buttons. It's nice, but I can easily imaging it getting dirty really quickly. Also, you will now find this gigantic horizontal screen borrowed directly from the Panamera. We love it. It has this very nice resolution and bright colours and as it's German, it's very intuitive and straight to the point. No way of getting lost here, even if you're like 150 years old.

The Cayenne is, like the rest of the Porsche range, very tech savvy. But how does it behave on the road? Well, let's just say that one could expect it to be quite clumsy. In some ways, it shares the same platform as the Bentley Bentayga and the Audi Q7. Both brilliant and fast cars, but we wouldn't say they are very sporty. The Cayenne, being a Porsche, had to have this special character. A way to go through curves only a Porsche could. So, how do you make an over two tons SUV twist like Billy Elliot? You give it rear-wheel steer. Something you could previously find on a 911 Turbo. But more than agility, the Cayenne is also balistically fast. You have a 4.0 turbocharged V8 (Panamera... Again) that develops 550 PS paired to a 8-speed automatic that is super responsive. 0 to 100 km/h you ask? Only 3.7 seconds! This is ridiculous, and actually 0.2 seconds faster than a Porsche Carrera GT. It flies, but it also brakes. Our car was equipped with Porsche's latest PSCB (Porsche Surface Coating Brake), which is a tungsten carbide layer applied on the disk brake. It doesn't rust or tarnish, it produces nearly no dust and is supposed to be a bit more grippy. Ehm, we just think they're pretty because they shine like a diamond. You can recognize them thanks to the white calipers. Another fun fact is the addition of an active rear-wing, that can act as an air-breake. That's a first.

Is the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo a game-changer? We think the looks are a significant upgrade, and so is the ride comfort, as I thought the last generation's chassis was a little rough. Is there something negative we could say about this car? Well, it's still isn't the prettiest car on earth. I mean, just look at this car's profile. It's still a bit weird. The steering is a bit numb, and we kind of miss the last version's engine grunt. But the complaints stop here. The Cayenne is capable of things we would have never imagined. It's so damn fast and agile, but it's comfortable, and you still get all this tech. And apparently it can go offroad. In 16 years, we've never seen a Cayenne go offroad. But that's another story. No, this could be the perfect car. Just because it lives up to Porsche's standards. Maybe, this should have been the real first Porsche SUV ever, so that we wouldn't think that Porsche building an SUV was such a bad idea in the beginning.

  • The issue I have with this car is not that it's ugly or bad to drive or lacking in performance. The issue I have is with it's cynicism. We're not talking just VW MLB platform sharing, unfortunately everyone does that nowadays; you said this could be the first real Porsche SUV but the fact of the matter is that it is a VW through and through, engineered and built entirely by VW at their plant in Slovakia. Yes, it has a few bits developed by Porsche like PASM but that hardly makes it a Porsche car.

    • I agree with you, and in a way it feels a bit sad. But, I’m talking about true performance and driving personality, I felt that it comes closer and closer to how a « real » Porsche is on the road!
