In the third installment of this year's series of the DriveTribe Reader's Choice Awards, the title for best SUV will be contested.

Jesse and Robert have already taken you through the hot hatches and family cars respectively, if you haven't read that already then make sure you do because there were some great contenders that missed out on the title.

Funnily enough, this article was supposed to go up two days a go but then my computer played tricks on me and I couldn't get in. I eventually got it fixed yesterday which is why you're seeing the article now. That was quite an unpleasant surprise and that has been the general tone of the year. However, people are resilient which is great and has meant that while car sales took a hit this year, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. A factor that didn't stop companies bringing out new models especially SUVs even though every major brand already has like 5 of them in their line-up already.

Enough about the year, I now have the honour to present to you the five best SUVs of 2020 and you get to vote for the best one!

1- Ford Puma

Kicking off the list is the smallest SUV of the lot and the cheapest. Yes, Ford's new Puma is supposed to be good to drive and is resurrecting an old name from their past but that's not why I like it. I like it because it's different. In today's world of beige SUVs where all of them just seem to draw a 'meh' response in terms of their design, the Puma is a standout. It's design splits opinions and that's what makes it special. It's based on the brilliant platform of the new Ford Fiesta which means that this is surely going to be a fun to drive SUV. It's got a great big boot for all your lifestyle stuff and the engines do have good sized turbos but the mild-hybrid system makes sure there's never any lag. It's a great recipe and the car does not disappoint.

2- Mazda CX-30

When Mazda first released this car, I thought they had lost the plot. They already have like 500 different SUVs on sale anyway so why add another one in between two top sellers? The CX-30 combines the best of the compact CX-3 and the larger CX-5 and I can see exactly why they have done it. In terms of what it competes with, the CX-30 is just so much better. The exterior is styled like a typical new Mazda SUV but the interior is where the magic happens. The quality is just excellent. Mazda do a great job of using their softer materials smartly but in the CX-30, they have outdone themselves. A car that brings a touch of luxury and a high level of refinement to this side of the market, it's a good buy. It's been a long year so it's crazy to think that the CX-30 just went on sale earlier in the year!

3- Kia Telluride

A list of the best SUVs from the past year wouldn't be complete without including the World Car of The Year, would it? And that coveted title went to the Kia Telluride. While this car isn't coming to my side of the world, I recently experienced the new Kia Sorento which is based on the Telluride and I was taken back by how good it was. I can only imagine then how spectacular the award winning Telluride is. In the past decade, we have seen Kia go from strength to strength in terms of making great cars and the Telluride is no different. It has bold looks, is packed to the rafters with safety tech and is a very high quality offering from Kia. A deserved inclusion on this list.

4- Aston Martin DBX

The competition at this end of the market is sparse and that statement was certainly true for this year except for the newly released Aston Martin DBX. The new Aston has walked straight into the path of cars like the Urus and Bentayga. It's hefty price tag has certainly left the Audi and Porsche alternatives out of the picture. This is very much a true Aston with plenty of leather on the inside and all of the company's design hallmarks on the outside. It's bloody quick too with 0-100 being achieved in less than 5 seconds and a top speed of 181 mph, you know this shouldn't disappoint.

WILDCARD- Audi RS Q3

The Audi RS Q3 is somewhat of a unicorn these days which is why I included it as my wildcard entry on this list. Firstly, it has a turbocharged five cylinder engine which makes a great burbley noise from an engine which I thought had become a casualty of stringent emission laws. This performance SUV is so driver focused, it's impossible to believe how good it is around corners and even in the straights. The Quattro system allows you to play around a bit as well! And then if you didn't think the exhaust note was loud enough then you might want to get it in that stunning Kyalami Green colour. This is a baby Urus to put it simply, it's even got the Lambo colour!

There you have it, the 5 best SUVs from the year gone by. This was a tough one as 2020 saw several new SUVs launched. You can vote for your favourite in the poll below or leave a comment and let me know if you thought there was a great SUV that I missed!

Thanks for reading and make sure to stay tuned for the next installment of this awards series.
