Talk about the perfect sleeper: Meet the Volvo V70 R
Hot Volvos have always been highly regarded amongst car enthusiasts. The 850 T-5R, for example, is one of the cars we all secretly dream about. This is also a good contender for unassuming sleeper car of the year. It's a 2005 Volvo V70 R and it packs 295 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
This rather interesting V70 R has recently been sold on Bring a Trailer for a reasonable $16,250 – and that looks like a bargain. It's done 117,000 miles but that's nothing on a car like this, Volvos can go to the Moon and back and still feel like new.
It comes with an intriguing combination of "Magic Blue" paint for the exterior and Atacama leather upholstery for the interior. The previous owner replaced the original automatic transmission with a M66 6-speed manual gearbox. It also comes with a rear spoiler, self-levelling headlights, BC coilover and Brembo brakes. Ah yes, there's also a big subwoofer and a iPd boost gauge.
It is powered by a 2.5 L turbocharged inline-five and the engine has been modified with the addition of a new turbo, a new blow-off valve, a custom intake and engine mounts, methanol injection and a custom ECU.
I feel like most gearheads consider owning a fast Volvo at some point. It's one of those things you're occasionally thinking about when looking at classifieds. And the great thing about it is that, unlike most classic cars, this isn't a bad financial decision waiting to happen – it is a properly good daily car.
