Tata Nexon EV expected to launch in December 2019
While the Indian government battles out the predicament of installing an EV-friendly infrastructure across the nation, you can't expect the car manufacturers to wait. If Hyundai's proposition was a little expensive for the predominant Indian population and MG's solution still months away, we have a domestic carmaker looking to bridge the gap. And if the rumours are true, we might be very close to see that bridge in the metal soon.
Speculations doing rounds of the internet suggests Indian carmaker Tata Motors will be launching the Nexon EV, its first all-electric SUV soon. While the expected unveil date hovers around December 15 of this year, Tata will be looking to launch the car by the first quarter of 2020.
Tata will equip the Nexon EV with its recently launched Ziptron EV technology. Developed with a purpose to make electric mobility affordable to Indian consumers, the Ziptron technology will handle the powertrain duties in the Nexon. While its exact specifications haven't been revealed yet, Tata did clarify the electric motor's adherence to IP67 standards of dust- and water-proofing while carrying a warranty period of eight years.
The Ziptron powertrain is said to also come with long-range travel (about 300kms in the Nexon), fast charging capability along with regenerative braking function. Expected prices for the upcoming Nexon EV lingers around the sub INR 20 lakh area.
In its recent marketing tactics, Tata has tried to create this EV's impression as of a tough-terrain endurer. One of it involves marathon runner Milind Soman and his wife to venture from Manali to Leh in the Nexon EV. Via a course of seven short videos, the couple demonstrates the E-SUV's capability of going through rough terrain and extreme weather conditions, albeit limited charging facilities.
Carmakers will be looking to fill up this segment with an iteration of an existing vehicle or a brand new EV altogether. Tata seems to be going the former way as it's upcoming launches include the likes of the updated Tigor EV with this Ziptron technology and the Altroz EV, a premium hatchback.
