Being honest, until recently I've only ever worn Alpinestars boots, more specifically their Supertech R model.

I've had four pairs over the last decade and they say don't fix what isn't broken. I'd tell absolutely everyone to try them, they were as comfortable as trainers to walk in, didn't squeak, and provided a snug fit that was perfect for me.

Then I saw the TCX RT-Race Pro Air and thought I'd give them a test.

First time out, I suffered a minor lowside, which isn't ideal but at least it gives the gear a chance to test its mettle. Looking at the boots in pit lane afterwards, I wasn't even sure which one I'd crashed on, that's how little damage there was to them, a small scuff on the toe slider the only sign of a spill.

Fitment

It's no exaggeration to say these boots are almost identical to the Alpinestars Supertech R. The lacing system, ratchet system, inner boot and zip. If you put an A* badge on these I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference. This is a very good thing as for 2018, Alpinestars has made their Supertech R model stiffer.

This means the comfort of old is gone, and makes walking in them more difficult. So if you miss the last generation of Supertech R, then TCX has come to rescue!

The only gripe so far is mine are a tad squeaky, which I've been told can be sorted with some WD-40. I've touched toes down on track and road and the mangesium sliders haven't budged. The lacing is rugged and can withstand a good tug, unlike some other brands...

The fluoro yellow/white/red really stands out and I've been asked a few times what boots they are. The ratched is also of decent enough length to get around your leathers if you wear a one-piece suit at the track.

Cooling, especially in the current weather is also great, with loads of venting.

It would appear the TCX RT-Race Pro Air has knocked Alpinestars off the top spot as my new favourite boot.

  • I've been wearing the SMX plus for years now, just one step 'down', but ever so comfy. Give em a shot.

    • That must suck to always have to opt for the cheaper version of things because you're poor😂

  • Are these what Zarco wears? It might sound superficial but when it comes to these things I look for pedigree, it’s not like you can go out and test them.

I swear by Alpinestars, I’m convinced the SMX Plus saved my foot on a SMIDSY many moons ago and have stuck with that brand ever since and I now wear their Supertech.

I would definitely give TCX a go if they’re at least as good as the Alpinestars and they seem reasonably priced, unlike some other brands *cough*Daytona*cough*

    • I’ve already had a small off in them without issue. They are as good as the second generation super tech in my opinion
