Tesla Has Officially Made It To India
This begins Tesla's journey in India
Tesla has planned on entering India since 2016, ever since the launch of the Model 3. There were several things stopping Tesla from entering India- one of them being the obnoxiously high import rates in India. For Tesla to keep attractive prices in India, they would have to start manufacturing in India. This was a possibility, with Tesla starting a factory in Tamil Nadu, but this was deemed to be too costly for the company.
The year 2021 was the year Tesla CEO, Elon Musk , expected to launch the brand in India- he also mentioned in his tweets that he expected to launch the brand in India, in any of the years between 2017-2019.
A few days ago- Tesla officially registered their subsidiary in India. Named as Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited , the registered address is in the city of Bangalore.
The directors of the company are Vaibhav Taneja - Chief Accounting Officer, Venkatarangam Sreeram - a Bangalore based entrepreneur, and David Feinstein- Global Senior Director of Tesla. Karnataka Chief Minister also tweeted that Tesla would start its India operations with an R&D Centre based in Bangalore.
Tesla will launch the Model 3 in India during financial year 2021, the earliest date of launch given is the 'end of First Quarter- 2021'.
The Model 3 sedan shall be imported as a Completely Built Unit ( CBU ) , most likely from the Gigafactory in China.
Tesla is also in touch with other state governments like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to start its India operations.
