Tesla has planned on entering India since 2016, ever since the launch of the Model 3. There were several things stopping Tesla from entering India- one of them being the obnoxiously high import rates in India. For Tesla to keep attractive prices in India, they would have to start manufacturing in India. This was a possibility, with Tesla starting a factory in Tamil Nadu, but this was deemed to be too costly for the company.

The year 2021 was the year Tesla CEO, Elon Musk , expected to launch the brand in India- he also mentioned in his tweets that he expected to launch the brand in India, in any of the years between 2017-2019.

A few days ago- Tesla officially registered their subsidiary in India. Named as Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited , the registered address is in the city of Bangalore.

The directors of the company are Vaibhav Taneja - Chief Accounting Officer, Venkatarangam Sreeram - a Bangalore based entrepreneur, and David Feinstein- Global Senior Director of Tesla. Karnataka Chief Minister also tweeted that Tesla would start its India operations with an R&D Centre based in Bangalore.

Tesla will launch the Model 3 in India during financial year 2021, the earliest date of launch given is the 'end of First Quarter- 2021'.

The Model 3 sedan shall be imported as a Completely Built Unit ( CBU ) , most likely from the Gigafactory in China.

Tesla is also in touch with other state governments like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to start its India operations.

  • And they lived happily ever after.

That is until people realise that they're too expensive...

  • I’d expect Tesla to enter India’s market via their commercial energy storage and production division before attempting to flog their EVs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • This could even actually be someone naming their own company Tesla in hopes of selling it to them at a premium 🤣. You never know

  • A country where there's still hourly/daily power outages, how will one manage to run a Tesla? And don't get me started on the costs of buying one. They'd cost as much as a new A4. A4 sells a lot. But it's not an EV.

Apparently Tesla is also coming to my country(Pakistan) in the same way as India. But I don't see it working tbh.

    • Daily power outages- you'd really think Tesla is targetting tier 2 cities in India?

They aim for the tier 1 cities in India like Mumbai, Bangalore , Chennai and Hyderabad- these cities have actually gotten their power outages fixed-...

    • The days of Daily power outages in India are gone. Nowadays most people get consistent electricity with 'meh' internet speeds.
