Not only did Tesla release a semi-truck which looks like something out of iRobot tonight, they also left a surprise at the end in the form of the all new 2020 Tesla Roadster. This is the future of supercars basically.
Of course, being a Tesla, it's going to be fully electric. The powertrain is a three motor set up meaning, it is AWD. The battery which powers this monster is rated at 200kWh which equates to roughly 1050bhp, 10,000nm of torque (yes, that's what he said) and a 620 mile range. All that power means this car can do 0-60mph in just 1.9 seconds, and 0-100mph in 4.2 seconds. It' also does a quarter mile at 8.9 seconds. Elon Musk didn't quote an exact top speed but he did say that it will be able to get to at least 250mph. Oh, and these are numbers for the basic model. Yes, there is an even faster version to come next year.
Practicality wise, it has a 2+2 interior and enough luggage space for a long weekend away. And if you live in a part of the world where it tends to be sunny a lot, you can take the roof off too. Again, with the 620 mile range, you can travel from London to Paris and back again, on one charge. That's incredible.
Styling wise, this is a completely new design language for a Tesla road vehicle. It's certainly more distinguishable than the Model S/3/X line and so it should be. It's a hypercar slayer after all. Lines are a lot more crisp and aerodynamic than before too. The new Roadster is the halo car that Tesla has needed for a fair few years now.
Prices for the Founders Edition of the new Roadster start at $250,000 or, you can place a deposit of $50,000 for a regular one. When you take in the performance figures and practicality of the new Roadster, those prices are aimed directly at the McLaren 720S and Ferrari 488. Both the McLaren and Ferrari are slower and less practical. What Tesla has revealed today is the next generation of supercars. This is a Chiron killer.
