Tesla Roadster to feature SpaceX thrusters under number plate

Yes, you read that right. Elon Musk is turning the rocket for the road into a real spaceship

Last year, when the Tesla Roadster was originally unveiled to the public, Elon Musk hinted at the utterly ridiculous idea of fitting the car with a set of SpaceX cold air thrusters. He said this would come as part of a ‘SpaceX package’ but it was never considered a serious proposition.

However, this week, the company’s CEO has once again mentioned the bonkers plan to fit an already rapid electric hypercar with rockets powerful enough to send objects into orbit. In fact, whilst having an already interesting Twitter discussion about Tesla’s ‘summon’ feature, Musk explained how the SpaceX package would work. The conversation got changed to the potential optional extra after someone shared renders of a Back To The Future rendition of the Roadster.

According to Elon Musk, the thruster will be subtly hidden behind the number plate. He has also previously said that the thrusters will improve the car’s top speed and acceleration. However, he has also said that braking and cornering would also be improved meaning we can expect to see thrusters in other areas of the car.

In order to make the space-grade thrusters work, the SpaceX pack Roadster will have to feature an air tank and compressor. This could either fit in one of the luggage compartments or replace the rear seats fitting the hardcore supercar brief.

  • I hate all these silly Tesla 5 year old propositions. Even when they pull them off they aren't car-y, they are like something a star wars fan would want to see. Farting cars, celebration dances, rockets, it's all just gimmicky nonsense and not amusing in the slightest, just annoying.

Elon: Let's put a rocket on it.

    Tesla: W-What.

    Elon: Yes.
