From January 1st 2020, Tesla owners will have to pay $9.99 every month to access Tesla's 'Premium Connectivity' internet package. Tesla is hoping the new package will help to offset the cost incurred by some of the more data heavy streaming services like Netflix and YouTube.

The monthly charge is applicable to all Model S and Model X vehicles, and Model 3's sold from July 2018. All other Tesla's ordered before July 2018 will continue to enjoy free Premium Data Services for the lifetime of the vehicle.

Tesla owners who pay $9.99 per month (plus applicable tax) will continue to receive access to live traffic visualization and satellite view maps. Other services, such as music and video streaming, internet browser and Caraoke will still be available to all owners, but only owners who opt into the Premium Data service will be able to access them without a WiFi connection.

    • Do you not pay for cell service after buying your phone? That is literally what this is. It is a cellular data plan for high bandwidth functions.

    • That's how capitalism works.
