Teutonic Tuesday: Original-Teile Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR
After finishing as the overall team champion in the ‘97 FIA GT Championship with the CLK-GTR, Mercedes-Benz started development on the CLK-LM during the off-season. When development of the new car extended well into the ‘98 season, Mercedes continued running their older CLK-GTRs to win the 1st two rounds of the ‘98 FIA GT championship, until the CLK-LM was ready for debut at Hockenheim in the 3rd round.
But DTM specialist and FIA GT Championship debutant privateer Team Persson Motorsport continue racing their CLK-GTRs as the CLK-LMs rode rough shod over the competition during the rest of the season.
This #12 car, driven by Jean-Marc Gounon and Marcel Tiemann ultimately finished 3rd in the championship behind the CLK-LM (that won pretty much every round that year) and the Porsche 911 GT1s.
As for the model, this is a 1/43 scale model by “High Speed”. I actually have another example of the CLK-GTR GT1 race car, the #11 car that helped the Mercedes factory team win 4 races in the 1997 FIA GT Championship.
While that car (with a casting made by Welly with semi-gullwing doors that opened) may have had the better story, I love this particular scale model better. This has no opening doors or anything like that, but I love it that the decals are perfect and very close (if not identical) to the actual race car, even to the extent of the driver names on the door.
