The 10 most unreliable used cars
Stay away from these lemons!
Buying a used car is a tricky task unless you really know what to look for but no matter who you are, you don't want to end up with a lemon so here's 10 cars to watch out for.
If you've owned one or more of these cars, I want to hear about your ownership experience in the comments!
A UK based second hand car insurance company called Warranty Wise released a list of the most unreliable used cars based on the number of claims on faults and the cost of repairs which is how the order of this list has been determined.
1- Range Rover Sport
Surprise surprise, actually no surprises here as the Range Rover brand continues to be featured on lists such as these. The most common fault is suspension related and they started as early as 7 months and as late as 8 years.
2- Vauxhall Zafira
Apart from the looks, the Zafira suffers from major gearbox issues that start as early as 3 months and as late as 10 years.
3- Vauxhall Insignia
Here we have a second entry from Vauxhall and it's most common issues lie with its steering and problems start as early as 7 months and as late as 7 years. This makes for worrying reading as the Insignia is now sold as the new Holden Commodore in Australia and New Zealand.
4- Peugeot 207
French cars are known for their poor reliability however this Peugeot is only one of two French cars on this list. It's the engine and head gaskets that give the most trouble with these. Problems have started as early as 2 months and as late as 10 years.
5- Vauxhall Astra
This is the 3rd Vauxhall on this list and it really makes for worrying reading for fans of the brand. The biggest issue with the Astra is the gearbox with problems starting from as little as 3 months of ownership or as late as 9 years.
6- Mercedes Benz C class
The second luxury car to make this list is also the popular alternative to the BMW 3 series, it's the Merc C class. These most commonly suffer from electrical and sensor issues but luckily, they aren't anywhere as costly as the faults on the previous cars in the list. Problems started as early as 5 months and as late as 9 years.
7- Mini Cooper
While this reborn classic has found a lot of fans in recent times, it's new owners have meant the ownership costs of a Mini have never been lower. The clutch, engine and the gearbox are the three areas of concern here with problems starting as early as 6 months and as late as after 1 year of ownership. A pretty poor showing from Mini on the reliability front.
8- Seat Ibiza
While the Ibiza is a remodeled Polo/Fabia, it seems to suffer from a lot more problems than it's cousins. Engine faults have been the bane of this car's existence and problems have started as early as 3 months and as late as after 9 years of ownership.
9- Fiat 500
If you were expecting to see an Italian car on this list then here it is and I am quite surprised because I was fully expecting to see an Alfa here! The 500 is a revamped classic just like the Mini and like the Mini, it too suffers from a variety of faults. The most common issues came from the suspension, gearbox and the electrics. Problems started as quickly as 7 months and as late as 7 years of ownership.
10- Renault Clio
The second entrant from France is the famous Renault Clio. Most of the reported claims came from faults with the electrics, ignition and the suspension though these faults aren't overly expensive to fix in comparison to some of the issues that the other cars on this list face.
