The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado To Be First Chevrolet Vehicle With Super Cruise.
GM announced the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado to feature the new Super Cruise technology.
The Silverado will be the first pickup truck in North America to feature the hands-free driving technology General Motors calls "Super Cruise". Pickup trucks are now no longer being considered second-tier in receiving the latest automotive technology.
What Is Super Cruise?
Super Cruise is a term General Motors uses in reference to its hands-free driving technology. If you are familiar with Tesla's Auto Pilot, you likely will understand how Super Cruise is intended to function. It was first introduced in 2017 in the Cadillac CT6, later expanding to the CT4 and CT5.
The system is designed to use high-definition maps, road sensors and a in-vehicle monitoring system for driver attentiveness. In addition, the system will function with the GPS to get you to your destination seemlessly.

Presently, General Motors states currently there are more than 200,000 miles of mapped/approved Super Cruise roads, with more being added constantly.
The Downfalls Of Super Cruise.
Like any new hands-free technology it is still in the testing stages. The system is given the classification of Level 2 driving autonomy. This level means in plain terms that while it can manage multiple functions of the vehicle while it is in motion, it can not make decisions on its own or follow map guidance autonomously. The Super Cruise function will also not be able to function when the vehicle detects a trailer has been connected.
Additionally, the Super Cruise feature can not opperate and will deactiviate if its cameras become obstructed by snow, sun glare, mud/dirt, and even uneven road surfaces.
Then there is the price of the system. General Motors has not given specific pricing for the Chevrolet Silverado. However, paying attention to the system cost on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade it will cost an additional $2,500 for the Super Cruise option along with an $8,850 options package that Super Cruise can't be optioned without. And, just before you think you have paid enough for the system there is also an additional monthly charge of $25.00 for the GM Connected Services.
New Vehicles to Feature the Super Cruise Option.
GM President Mark Reuss announced that Super Cruise will be expanding to 22 GM vehicles by 2023. However, there is a catch to wanting to take advantage of this new technology. Next year, the vehicles to fashion this new hands-free technology will be the 2022 GMC Sierra Denali and the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country.
For the time being, it is unclear if lower base-model trims will have this technology available to it but for now it will only be offered to customers willing to spend $61,590+ on a new truck.
More updates to come in the next few weeks.
