The 2022 Mazda2 is a rebadged Toyota Yaris hybrid for the European market

It may seem like a cop-out at first, but this is actually genius on Mazda's part

Mazda has unveiled the all-new Mazda2 hybrid but there's one thing that feels awfully familiar about it, but what is it? Oh yeah, it looks to be a rebadged Toyota Yaris Hybrid – but why is that?

Well, Toyota actually started offering a rebadged Mazda2 as a Yaris in the North American market back in 2016, so now the Japanese automakers can call it even. It isn't uncommon for manufacturers to share parts and in fact, works out as the best option for both parties.

Anyway, on to the car. The 2022 Mazda2 hybrid will be sold alongside the existing Mazda2 from spring of next year.

Using Toyota’s latest self-charging hybrid powertrain, the new Mazda2 produces a combined 114hp and 125 lb-ft of torque from its 1,490 cc three-cylinder engine. The Mazda2 Hybrid can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 9.7 seconds and has an estimated combined WLTP fuel economy of between 74.3 and 70.6 mpg.

In terms of trim levels, the new Mazda2 Hybrid will be available in Pure, Agile, and Select forms.

One of the reasons this model is such a big deal is because this is the first time Mazda is offering a full hybrid model in the European market and we don't see why it won't sell well – especially when looking at the Yaris sales.

This move will certainly help Mazda to achieve its goal of reducing its corporate average well-to-wheel CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and then onto achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
