The 2022 Subaru WRX will be bigger, faster and CVT*

*Only some markets will receive a manual option.

Subaru has a few projects underway including the next generation BRZ, and rumours of an AWD hot hatch being co-developed with Toyota. There has also been a significant amount of hype for the next generation WRX, and leaked information from Japanese car magazine Best Car details some pretty interesting stuff.

According to the publication, the next WRX will be larger in physical size, measuring 4.65m in length, 1.85m in width and 1.45m in height. Wheelbase will be increased to 2.67 metres, and the entire chassis will be built off Subaru's new Global Platform architecture.

Power will come from an enlarged turbocharged flat-4, coming in at a displacement of 2.4 litres, with a power output of an estimated 214kW (287hp), and a torque figure of 412Nm. Unfortunately for purists, the manual gearbox will be ditched in some markets (we are yet to know which ones), and instead replaced with the commonly used CVT automatic.

The interior will likely resemble that of the new Outback and similar Subaru models, with an 11.6 inch tablet style multimedia touchscreen central display and an even larger 12.3 inch digital dashboard display controlled via buttons on the steering wheel. We'd expect that alongside these shared components, the WRX will receive unique sports seats and a sportier stitched leather interior.

Rumours have also remained about the upcoming hardcore WRX STI model, which will supposedly deviate even further from the standard WRX than currently stands, with an RS3 / A45 rivalling 294kW (394hp) and 489Nm. Best Car states that both the WRX and WRX STI will be making their first appearances soon, with the standard car late this year and the STI in 2022. We also expect to see more leaks and spoilers in the coming months.

  • NOOOOO!!!!!! if you're going to drop the manual at least have a dual clutch or conventional automatic, CVTs are so annoying.

    • Most people can’t tell which cars have CVT’s anymore after Subaru added fake shift points to their CVT’s to make them emulate conventional transmissions. Too many people coming in for service because the “car doesn’t sound right” or...

    • That doesn't make it a good transmission especially for performance applications

  • I can’t comprehend why anyone would want a WRX or STi with a cvt🤦🏻 Subaru please make a dual clutch transmission for those who can’t actually drive and leave a good old 6sp manual for those if us that can and actually enjoy driving!

    • Driving doesn’t equal shifting. Show me an F1 car with a stick. Dual clutches are great alternatives and keep your hands on the wheel. Porsche’s PDK is phenomenal

    • By the same token quick automatic shifting doesn’t equal driving pleasure. I bought an STI because it’s an STI and I love shifting through the gears myself and the old school hand brake. IF there’s no manual option in my market I will very...

  • They took the frond half of the current wrx and merged it with the rear half of a corolla. The current wrx looks much better.
