The 5 Greatest Race Cars Of All Time
Each of these cars thoroughly dominated at their respective sports for years...
This list is not based off of one sport but multiple, including NASCAR, Group B Rally, Formula 1 and Endurance racing. Each of these cars crushed their competition for years and have been remembered for their dominance and beauty.
Dodge Charger Daytona/Plymouth Superbird
Years raced- 1970
Races won- 33 out of a total of 48
These cars where so dominant in just one year that they where banned from racing. They won 33 out of the 48 total races in 1970, which is absolutely absurd for a car to do. With it's sleek aerodynamic body kit and 426 Hemi under the hood this car was unstoppable especially with The King himself behind the wheel who won 18 races with it in 1970 which is out of this world!!! This car was also the very first NASCAR to hit 200MPH on March 24, 1970 which was unheard of at the time.
Years raced- 1969-1971
Races won- 14 out of 18 races entered
This car is an icon known for dominating endurance racing during a 3 year span. It won 1st overall at the famed 1970 and 1971 24 hours of Le Mans endurance race. Powered by an air-cooled flat-12 making over 600hp the 917 just walked away from the competition. It even appeared in the 1971 movie Le Mans, where it was driven by Steve McQueen. It dominated almost every race it entered in and was also known for the incredible noise that engine made, the 917 is truly one of the all time greats.
Audi Quattro S1
Years raced- 1978-1987
Championships won- The Quattro won 2 constructors titles.
The Audi Quattro was the worlds first all-wheel-drive rally car, which is crazy to think about when almost all modern rally cars are AWD. The Quattro was revolutionary for it's time and crushed it's competition during it's spectacular 9 year run. With a turbocharged Inline-5 making over 500hp it certainly had the power to outrun everyone. This car is iconic and will be remembered as possibly the greatest rally car of all time.
Years raced- 1964-1969
Races won- The Gt40 won 4 times in a row at Le Mans from 1966 to 1969
Possibly the most iconic race car of all time, with the greatest underdog story in the history of Motorsports. The GT40 dethroned Ferrari as the king of endurance racing in the 60's getting their revenge. By now I'm sure everyone has heard the incredible story so there is no need to go into detail, but the GT40 was powered by one of the most beautiful engines ever made, Ford's very own 427ci. V8 pumping out over 500hp and able to propel this car to 200mph!
Years raced- 1988
Races won- Won 15 of 16 races in 1988
With a win rate of 93.8% the MP4/4 is the most successful Formula 1 car of all time statistically, driven by Ayrton Senna and Alan Prost the MP4/4 won an incredible 15 of 16 races only losing at the Italian Grand Prix due to engine failure. This car was completely unstoppable, partly because of it's legendary drivers and partly because it was a fantastic car.
