Being Abarth's 70th anniversary this year, the company have brought back the evocative Esseesse name for a special edition. The Abarth 595 is and probably always will be one of my favourite cars. I ran one for 2 years and loved it tremendously. As long as you had some patients, there was really nothing it couldn't do. I transported my mountain bike about in the back of it, as well as various other big stuff unable to fit in my new Mini. It was so much fun to drive with really responsive steering and an exhaust that if you got the change right made a huge crack noise on up-shifts.
This clip accurately represents the driving experience of an Abarth.
Me enjoying the exhaust plus some stupid laughter.
This new car for 2019 has an Akrapovic exhaust, bigger brakes and carbon fibre pedals (bloody hell that's cool). Abarth's are such simple cars that remind you what driving is all about. Yes everyone used to say to me "your car is just a Fiat 500" which is difficult to argue with without boring the ears off anyone un-interested in cars. My usual reply would be "get in and I'll show you why it's nothing like a standard 500."
If you haven't driven an Abarth before I would strongly recommend finding your local dealer and blagging a test drive. It won't take long before you understand what I'm on about.
