My first snowy mountain pass with my 996.

What is the first good drive you go with your new car? I always have my special places I go when drive my new car.
For my 996 C4, I chose a nice remote pass, not really used in winter but still open. The Gurnigel pass.

The drive started home, an hour away from the pass. It was 11am. I unlocked and opened the cold car, sat in cold leather and started the engine. Let it warm up for a few seconds, selecting the drive position with the Tiptronic S lever and drove away. The drive was insignificant towards the pass, listening to random songs on the radio and figuring out how a 14 year old PCM works.

Arriving at the start of the Gurnigel pass, which connects the towns of Zollhaus and Riggisberg, no need to select any Sport, Sport+ or Race mode, no need to select Sport damping, you just turn off the PCM and select manual mode on the gearbox and you are set.

The road was empty, a nice layer of snow, me and my Porsche.

What else do you need?

There are some tricky sections, some fast sections and some boring parts but with snow all of these are just amazingly fun. You do drive slower but you spend a lot of time sideways. The behaviour of the 996 with it’s four-wheel drive system is so predictive. Once you understand how a rear-engine car handles, you really bond with the car and you are in a telepathic connection with you and your machine.

The drive up towards the pass took approximatively 20 minutes, took my time to enjoy myself sideways. Arriving at the pass, I parked at the Lower Gantrischhütte, took some photos and left towards Riggisberg. Going back down, I passed by the lost soul of the Gurnigelbad, a old reminder of the old-times.

"Proof of fun."

Heading back home, I realised I bought a great car. I also know what to do with it and I really am looking forward for my next drive somewhere else.
