The Ariel Atom 4 just beat the Veyron SS at Top Gear's test track
It sets the 13th fastest lap ever recorded at the Top Gear test track.
At the beginning of Top Gear Series 28 (which aired in January 2020), the Ariel Atom 4 was thrown around the Top Gear test track in the hands of Chris Harris, before being passed over to The Stig for a timed lap. The posted 1:25.3 time however was far from amazing, placing it lower on the scoreboard than heavier road-based cars like the BMW 1 Series M and M135i.
The main problem for the Atom was weather, as on the day of filming, the road was extremely wet. The Atom noticeably struggled for traction, so deciding that the car had a lot more to give on dry tarmac, the crew gave the Atom 4 another chance.

After a second thrashing around the circuit (this time in the dry), the Atom 4 managed to clock a time of just 1:16.0, making it the 13th fastest road-legal car with road-tires to ever lap the Top Gear test track. Matching the time of the Mercedes-AMG GT R, this placed the Atom higher in the leaderboard than must more expensive cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (991), McLaren 12C, Lamborghini Aventador and Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

Unlike the aforementioned supercars however, the Atom 4 is powered by a puny 2.0L turbo-four cylinder engine from a Honda Civic Type R, which pumps out a healthy 320hp and 310 lb-ft. Driven through the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, 0-60mph needs a mere 2.8 seconds.
All of this can be had in the United States for under six-digit figures, so if you want a bang-for-buck track car, the Ariel Atom 4 isn't a bad pick.
