The Avant Calendar: B6 S4

The V8 one

The Audi B6 S4 probably wouldn't get its own post if it wasn't for one thing, the engine. The RS4 is now synonymous with the V8, even if the S4 went back to a smaller engine, but the car that gained that engine never came in RS4 form.

The B6 was visually similar to the B5 and yet a lot more modern looking, a nip and tuck took years off the design and brought it in line with the Audi A6. The car was based on the VW B6 Platform, the first not sharing with the VW Passat. Audi took this as enough excuse to shove a V8 into the B6 platform. It was an all aluminium 4.2l V8 which developed 344hp, and yet the car was only as fast as the outgoing model?

While Audi Quoted a 5.8 second 0-60, MotorTrend managed to cut it under 5 seconds. Audi probably did this to make sure it wouldn't be outgunning their more expensive Audi S6, which was still in production albeit in its final year. The B6 S4 lasted from 03-04 in Avant form, seeming to be little more than a stop gap car, but an important one nonetheless. they can be had anywhere from £6,000-£11,000, and are a great way into a cheap V8.
