If we are talking about 4WD estates, we cannot leave out the Subaru Impreza WRX. Introduced for 1993, The little estate could make 217hp, and do 0-60 in 6.5 seconds, and gun it all the way to 142 mph.

And that wasn't all these little cars could give, oh no. They could get tuned up, many running in excess of 300hp. This made these cars into small weapons, which could carve up a mountain road as well as it could get down the 1/4 mile. All of this from 2000cc engine, under half of what the Audi S4/S6 need to achieve the same sorts of feats.

Later on Subaru Introduced the WRX STI, which was available as an estate. This cranked the power up to 276ph and further improved what was becoming a great rally car, only being beaten by the dominant and cheating Toyotas.

In 1996 the STI was bumped up to a reported 276hp, although in reality they produced 295hp, making a nearly 300hp estate car with 4WD. To get that power anywhere else, you would have to splash out on a Carrera 4S of the time, and even that fell a few horsepower short.
